You Are Living a Story - And It’s Worth Understanding

From the moment we are born, we live enstoried lives. Some stories from your past linger in your body and memory, often shaped by trauma, loss, or moments where you had to adapt to survive, and they continue to influence how you move through the world. As we gently delve into the narratives of our lives, we begin to recognize how these experiences have shaped us, allowing space for healing, integration, and hope within the remarkable story that God is authoring through us.

  • Trauma often shapes our stories beneath conscious awareness—through our bodies, beliefs, and ways of relating. These stories can influence how we move through the world long after the original experience has passed.

  • When most of us hear the word trauma we think of the worst cases of harm that we can imagine, and many dismiss the possibility that it—trauma—has touched our life. We tell ourselves we have a good life and come from good families, not perfect but not that bad; so, this is not me; that is not my story.

  • You may have experienced trauma and not even know it. When people hear the word trauma, they often hear the word abuse. Abuse is trauma, but trauma lives on a spectrum. It can be as simple as being bullied, your parents getting divorced, having an exacting coach/mentor who shames, having caretakers who didn’t seem to be available, and it can follow the spectrum all the way into abusive experiences.
